GUIDE 1

Use Embed Builder

Combine title, description, images, fields and buttons.

5 mins

Draft a message

  1. 1

Open Embed Builder and select the target channel.

  2. 2

Fill out title and description; Use additional fields only for clearly separated information.

  3. 3

Choose a color and add images or a timestamp if it helps.

  4. 4

Check the preview on desktop and mobile.

  5. 5

Don't publish the message until the channel and mentions are correct.

Boundaries and links

Discord limits the total length of an embed and the number of its fields. Link buttons must use HTTPS addresses. Mentions are controlled by default; only activate it when the message really needs it.

GUIDE 2

Set up logging

Distribute events in a targeted manner and avoid unnecessary noise.

5 mins

Plan log channels

The logging module can send events to a standard channel or use separate target channels for individual events. This means moderation cases, member changes and news events can be found separately.

  1. 1

Create private channels for sensitive team protocols.

  2. 2

    Choose a standard log channel.

  3. 3

Only override goals for events that need their own team or visibility.

  4. 4

Exclude channels where logs are unwanted.

  5. 5

Test individual events and control the rights of those reading them.

Message content

“Log message content” controls whether the bot is allowed to include the text of deleted and edited messages in logs. Content may contain private or personal information. Therefore, limit access to the log channel to people who need it for moderation or support.

GUIDE 3

Read and use log cards

Quickly classify the author, channel, action and context of a message.

3 mins

What's in a message card

News events show - to the extent Discord and the bot provide the data - author, channel, person acting, time, content and available attachments. Edit logs distinguish previous and new content. IDs in the footer help support with their search.

Contextual link and traceability

A contextual link leads to the channel or the original message if Discord can still reach it. A deleted message itself cannot be restored. Discord displays timestamps according to the local time zone of the person reading.

GUIDE 4

Assign events and log channels

Distribute the available protocol types appropriately to team channels.

4 mins

Event groups

You can set a standard channel and different channels for individual events. A dedicated channel per topic helps with searching, while a few channels keep maintenance easier.

  • Messages: messageDelete and messageEdit.
  • Members and moderation: memberJoin, memberLeave, ban, unban and moderation.
  • Server structure: role, channel, voice and nickname.
  • Who activity: tickets, automod, commands and dashboard.

Content and access

“Log message content” is turned on by default and controls whether the content of deleted or edited messages is logged. Logs can contain sensitive information. Therefore, limit channel access and determine internally who can read logs for support or moderation purposes.
